“Deeply committed to protecting” rights of Muslims in India: US

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the US was unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the religious rights of Muslims in India.

During a press briefing held on Monday in Washington, Miller said that the US is “deeply” dedicated to promoting religious freedom for all religious groups globally.

“We are deeply committed to promoting and protecting the universal respect for the right to freedom of religion and belief for all around the world,” he said.

Regarding inquiries about whether the US had engaged with the government of India concerning its treatment of Muslims, Miller declined to comment on private diplomatic conversations.

“[I] won’t to speak to private diplomatic conversations”, he declared.

However, the spokesperson indicated that the United States has raised concerns with various countries, including India, regarding the importance of affording equal treatment to members of all religious communities.

“[We] have engaged many countries, including India, on the importance of equal treatment for members of all religious communities,” he remarked.

When asked about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements about efforts to prevent Israel from attacking Gaza during Ramazan by dispatching an envoy to Tel Aviv, Miller chose not to offer a direct comment.

He stated, “We are aware of those comments but have no comment on it.”
