Former interior minister sentenced to 14 years in prison

KUWAIT CITY: A Kuwaiti court has sentenced former Interior and Defense Minister Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled to 14 years in prison for embezzlement in public funds.

The Ministerial Court sentenced the former interior minister to seven years in prison in a case pertaining to the Ministry of Defence. He was also dismissed from his position. An expatriate involved in the case was also sentenced to four years of imprisonment, who will be deported after the completion of his sentence. There are additional penalties too in this case, including return of the embezzled money.

In a separate ruling, Sheikh Al-Khaled was handed an additional seven-year prison term in a case related to the Ministry of Interior. In this ruling, a fine of 20 million Kuwaiti dinars was also imposed on the former minister. The court also ordered Sheikh Talal to return approximately 10 million Kuwaiti dinars.

Previously, the former minister had appeared before the investigative committee and the court. He had denied the charges in the both the cases. He also rejected the charges of embezzlement and money laundering.
