Harris addresses Palestine and Israel ahead of election day

Harris

PHILADELPHIA: United States Vice President Kamala Harris came with a clear goal to CNN’s town hall on Wednesday. To draw a contrast with Trump, made possible through the new angle provided by John Kelly earlier in the week.

FASCIST TRUMP

Harris’ strategy became clear in the opening moments of the town hall as she invoked the sentiments of former US president Donald Trump’s White House staff, who have called him “unfit and dangerous”.

“Do you think Donald Trump is a fascist?” asked CNN’s Anderson Cooper, after Harris brought up John Kelly, who reminded the American people earlier this week of Trump’s fixation with Hitler, which Harris described as a “911 call to the American people.”

“Yes I do, yes I do,” said Harris. That was the through line of the question and answer portion of the interview that followed.

PALESTINE

“What would you do to ensure not another Palestinian dies due to bombs being funded by US tax dollars?” asked one attendee.

“Far too many innocent Palestinian civilians have been killed. Its unconscionable,” responded Harris, explaining that she felt that Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar’s death has provided an opportunity to end the war by working towards a two-state solution. A solution in which “Israel and Palestinians in equal measure have security. Where the Palestinian people have dignity, self-determination, and the safety they so rightly deserve,” said the vice president.

“What do you say to voters who are thinking about supporting a third-party candidate, or staying on the couch, not voting at all because of this issue?” said Anderson, pushing for a more detailed answer. In what would become a trend for the interview, Harris would skew her answers away from addressing the issue, in this case the Israeli genocide, to one she believed could more easily unite the American people. Namely, the concerning comments of Donald Trump.

Harris stated that while there are people who care about the issue of Palestine and Israel, “they also care about our democracy and not having a president of the United States who admires dictators and is a fascist.”

ANTI-SEMITISM IN AMERICA

A similar answer would follow a question regarding anti-Semitism in America. “I’m going to tell you what doesn’t help,” said Harris, before once again invoking Kelly and his comments about Trump and his desire for generals that are completely loyal to him, like those of Hitler.

“Do you believe you would be more pro-Israel than Donald Trump?” asked Cooper, once again looking for a more consequential answer. Harris would dodge again, stating that she believes “Donald Trump is dangerous,” before bringing up Trump and Hitler’s generals yet again.

UNADDRESSED ISSUES

Questions that followed, including one regarding confidence in the supreme court, was met with similar answers that focused more on Trump than voters’ worries.

“He’s going to sit there, unstable, unhinged, plotting his revenge, plotting his retribution, creating an enemies list,” Harris said, adding that “my list will be a list of how I address and continue to address the issues that you all are raising this afternoon.”

However, issues brought up by voters went largely unaddressed, as Vice President Harris opted to focus her attention on disqualifying former president Donald Trump before the election on November 5.
