Harris narrows VP search to Shapiro and Walz, decision expected today

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

PENNSYLVANIA: Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has narrowed her search for a vice presidential running mate to two finalists, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to three sources on Monday (August 5).

Harris is expected to announce her selection by Tuesday (August 6), before her first public appearance with her running mate that evening at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Kamala Harris rejects Trump’s debate offer

It was unclear if a final decision has been made, the sources said. The rally will kick off a five-day, seven-city tour of battleground states likely to decide the November 5 election.

The choice of a running mate is crucial for Harris as she prepares to challenge Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and US Senator JD Vance, his vice presidential pick, in the November 5 election. Vance will also campaign in South Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Shapiro, 51, is a rising star with strong approval ratings in Pennsylvania, a key state with 19 electoral votes. As a former state attorney general, Shapiro would be the first Jewish vice president, adding to the ticket’s historical significance alongside Harris, who aims to become the first Black and South Asian American woman elected US president. His support for Israel might alienate some progressive voters but could appeal to moderates.

Walz, 60, is a former US Army National Guard member and teacher who has recently raised his profile as an effective advocate for Harris. He has criticized Trump and Vance, a tactic embraced by the Harris campaign.

As a former congress memeber from a Republican-leaning district, Walz appeals to rural, white voters while championing progressive policies as governor.

Speculation had included six finalists: four governors, a senator, and a cabinet secretary, all white men with a record of winning over rural, white, or independent voters. Besides Shapiro and Walz, contenders included US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

Kamala Harris officially secures Democratic nomination

Candidates will be informed on Monday night or Tuesday morning whether they were picked, sources told Reuters. The Harris campaign plans a social media announcement featuring the duo, according to campaign officials.
