ICC decides to make stop clock permanent in ODIs, T20s

WEB DESK: On Saturday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) mandated the use of stop-clocks between overs in limited-overs international matches. Additionally, they approved the playing conditions for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and announced the qualification process for the 2026 edition.

The stop-clock will become a permanent fixture in all ODIs and T20Is starting from June 2024, commencing with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the West Indies and USA.

Initially introduced on a trial basis in December 2023 for men’s limited-overs international matches, the stop-clock has already proven its effectiveness in ensuring timely completion of matches. Although the trial period was set to run until April 2024, its success has prompted its permanent adoption.

Exceptions:

New batter at the wicket: When a new batsman arrives.
Drinks interval: Official break for drinks.
Umpire-approved injury treatment: Approved on-field medical attention.
Time lost due to uncontrollable circumstances: Time lost beyond the fielding team’s control.
