WASHINGTON: A series of proposals from the Republic Party in United States Congress raised eyebrows, as the initiatives includes a bill aimed at purchasing the mineral-rich Greenland and repurchasing Panama Canal.
A bill was also introduced to rename Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in official records and maps.

Even before assuming office, the President-elect Donald Trump sent ripples around the globe. In true reality media fashion, the billionaire threatened close allies, vowed to take over the Panama Canal militarily if needed, claimed Greenland, and suggested Canadians would “love” to join the US as its 51st state.
The focus on Greenland is particularly worrisome, echoing the purchase of Alaska. However, it brought the low populated, ice-covered Arctic region to the world’s attention.
Seizing advantage, Greenland leader, Mute Egede indicated a readiness to engage in talks with the volatile US president-elect about the future of Greenland.
Previously, he stated that the Greenland needed to think about its own future, hinting at possible breaking away from Denmark.
However, Egede made it clear that the vast, sparsely-populated territory does not seek to become part of the United States.
“We are open to discussions. Cooperation involves dialogue and working towards solutions. We desire independence and the ability to manage our own affairs.
“This is something that should be respected. Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not wish to be Danish or American; we want to be Greenlandic”.
Greenland has been a Danish territory since the 18th century and gained self-governing status in 1953. The territory was granted the right to pursue independence in 2009, contingent upon public vote.
The strategic significance of Greenland, particularly regarding its natural resources and military positioning, has drawn attention.
Trump previously characterised control over Greenland as ‘essential’ for the United States, a view he reiterated in a recent press conference.
The businessman-turned-politician argued that acquiring Greenland would bolster US economic security, never mind what the locals think or want.

The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, responded to all the unfolding drama by stating that “Greenland belongs to the Greedlanders”, and sternly responded to the upcoming US president that “Greenland was not for sale”.
