Karachi schools to reopen tomorrow after two-day closure

karachi school closed amid heavy rains

KARACHI: After two consecutive days of rain-related holidays, private schools in Karachi will reopen tomorrow (Friday), the All Private Schools Management Association Sindh (APSMA) announced on Thursday night.

APSMA Chairman Syed Tariq Shah said all private schools in the city would remain open on August 22 as “the rain situation is under control” and no holiday notification has been issued by the Sindh government.

“Regular classes will continue as per schedule. All school managements are requested to ensure smooth operations and take necessary safety precautions where required,” he said in a statement.

The notification came after all public and private schools were kept shut on Wednesday and Thursday due to heavy downpours that left large parts of Karachi submerged.

Earlier announcements by Minister Education & Literacy Government of Sindh and APSMA had cited safety concerns for students, teachers and staff, as widespread waterlogging made commuting unsafe.

Schoolchildren stranded in floodwaters

On Tuesday, many schoolchildren were stranded for hours in floodwaters as torrential rain paralysed traffic across the city.

Social media remained flooded with parents’ desperate appeals for information about their children, while several areas faced power outages and blocked roads.

The heavy rainfall also drew criticism of the city’s fragile infrastructure. Newly built roads caved in, while clogged drains worsened urban flooding.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah admitted that the city should not have faced such severe flooding and apologised for the inconvenience caused, though he maintained that most water was cleared within hours.

He also complained that no advance warning of “torrential rain” was issued at the time of the deluge.

Officials said drainage work has since been expedited and business activities are resuming in most markets.
