RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has said that the sole purpose of the proposed constitutional amendment is to keep him in jail.
In an informal conversation with journalists in Adiala jail Rawalpindi, Khan said that a constitutional court is being set up because the authorities are afraid of the Supreme Court. He warned that the new amendment would play havoc with the country’s future.
“The rulers have done everything they can to undermine the judiciary. This is all being done to cover up election fraud. They are scared that if the election results are scrutinized, everything will unravel,” he said.
Imran Khan criticised the government, stating, “Threatening judges, abducting people, and disregarding the rule of law will only harm the country. Everything is being done against the national interest. Trying to eliminate a political party will only lead to further political instability.”
He accused the ruling elite of prioritising their personal wealth over the nation’s well-being.
“The money of those pushing for this amendment is stashed abroad. The people in power don’t want an independent judiciary. The interests of the elite are completely at odds with those of the country. In the last six months, 4,000 Pakistani companies have been registered in Dubai. It doesn’t matter to them because their money and properties are overseas. The Dubai leaks exposed that Mohsin Naqvi’s wife has properties worth $500 million abroad. Now, we’re running the country on loans, which is why inflation is uncontrollable.”
He urged the people to stand up for their rights and protect the judiciary. “I stand with the judges, the judiciary, and the journalists. They want to weaken the judiciary by bringing back Qazi Faez Isa. We will not remain silent about this. We will protest vigorously, and a peaceful demonstration will be held in Lahore on the 21.”
