ISLAMABAD: Sazgar Engineering Works has begun taking bookings for its first locally assembled plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The move is part of the company’s shift towards cleaner transport.
The vehicle, named Haval H6 Hi4 1.5L AT AWD Turbo, is expected to hit the market in August 2025. Sazgar announced the update in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Monday.
Unlike regular hybrids, PHEVs have larger batteries. These allow the car to run on electricity for short trips before switching to fuel. In Pakistan, where charging stations for electric vehicles are still few, this makes PHEVs a more practical choice.
Sazgar also plans to launch two more models. One is an SUV, the Tank-500 Hi4-T 4×4 2.0L Turbo AT PHEV. The other is a pickup, the Cannon Alpha Hi4-T 4×4 2.0L Turbo AT PHEV. Both are expected to arrive by March 2026.
Pakistan’s EV market is still growing, but recent government steps hint at progress. Earlier, authorities slashed electricity rates for EV chargers by 45 per cent. The aim is to lower costs and encourage private firms to set up charging points.
“This is a healthy move for market competition,” said Samiullah Tariq, Head of Research at Pak-Kuwait Investment Company.
A few days ago, Chinese EV maker BYD also revealed plans to enter the market. The company aims to launch its first locally assembled vehicle by mid-2026 to tap into rising demand.
