ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday announced the suspension of election process in Kohat following the death of political candidate.
In a notification issued by the ECP, the decision to close the constituency was prompted by the death of a political candidate.
Election process was halted for the provincial assembly seat in PK-91 Kohat.
The ECP stated that a revised schedule for elections in PK-91 will be released at a later date. Candidates will be required to resubmit their nomination papers.
Election process was suspended in Bajaur on January 31 for the national and provincial assembly seats in NA-8 and PK-22, respectively following the assassination of political candidate Rehan Zeb Khan.
He was shot dead by unidentified armed men while campaigning in Sadiqabad Phatak Bazar area. The slain politician was also a former member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He decided to run as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the party.
The Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday declared that the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8 will proceed as planned, despite prevailing security issues. Security issues are of particular concern in the regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
During a meeting, the election commissioner said he was confident that the local law enforcement agencies and the Pakistan army will be able to effectively deal with any security threats.
