Stranger Things season 5: the biggest questions heading into the final chapter

Stranger Things

With volume one of the final season set to release on Wednesday 26 November, Stranger Things is heading into its last act, and even after everything Hawkins has endured, the biggest questions are still hanging in the air. With the Upside Down tearing through the town and Vecna still at large, season five is shaping up to be less about new mysteries and more about finally getting answers to the ones that have followed these characters from the very beginning.

At the centre of those unanswered questions is Max.

The last time viewers saw her, she was alive but unresponsive, her body broken and her mind unreachable. Eleven was unable to find her in the void, suggesting that Max’s consciousness may be trapped somewhere far darker than a simple coma. Whether her mind is hidden, fractured or being held by Vecna has become one of the most talked-about threads among fans. Her fate is not just emotional. It could be the key to weakening Vecna from within or revealing the true nature of his power.

Vecna himself is another unresolved piece of the puzzle. While he has established himself as the primary villain, there are signs that he may not be the only force at work. The Upside Down feels less like a single creature’s domain and more like an entire ecosystem with its own rules. Larger, previously unseen threats have been hinted at, raising the possibility that Vecna is either serving something greater or has lost control of what he unleashed.

Then there is Will Byers. Since his escape from the Upside Down, he has never been entirely free of it. He can still sense its presence and often feels its movements before anyone else does. His connection to the Mind Flayer and, by extension, Vecna has never been fully explained. Some fans believe this could make him a target, while others think it may make him essential in stopping whatever comes next.

Hawkins itself is also a question mark. The sky glows an unnatural red, smoke curls over the town and the ground has split beneath it. Normal life no longer feels possible. Season five will need to answer whether the town can be restored, or whether its destruction is part of the story’s final cost. Hawkins is no longer just a setting. It is a battlefield.

Even the show’s relationships carry weight going into the finale. Between long-standing friendships, complicated love stories and bonds formed through trauma, there is a need for resolution. These characters have grown up in the shadow of something supernatural, and the final season will need to honour that journey without losing the tension that made the series so compelling in the first place.

Stranger Things has always balanced horror with heart. As it moves towards its conclusion, what fans are really waiting for is not just a victory over the Upside Down, but an understanding of what it all meant.
