SYDNEY: A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor who was among those seriously wounded in the Bondi Beach shooting has died in hospital, nearly a year after the attack that killed 15 people at a Jewish holiday celebration in Sydney, Australian authorities said on Friday.

Eva Geller was injured when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025. She had been in and out of hospital since the shooting because of her injuries, public broadcaster ABC reported. She died in a Sydney hospital overnight.

New South Wales police said they were aware of Geller’s death and were awaiting further information while working with the coroner’s office.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was saddened by the news, adding that the attack’s impact continued to be felt by victims’ families and the Jewish community.

“Almost a year on, the devastation of that awful day continues to cause pain for families and today we recognise that more than ever,” Albanese said. “We are wrapping our arms around Eva’s family, friends and the Jewish community at this very sad time.”

Fifteen people were killed in the shooting, one of the deadliest mass attacks in Australia in decades. Police have said the alleged attackers, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, were inspired by the Islamic State group. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son, who was also wounded, survived and faces charges including 15 counts of murder and a terrorism offence.

The attack also drew attention to acts of courage by bystanders, including Pakistani law student and rideshare driver Abdullah Ashraf, who was hailed as a hero for providing life-saving assistance during the shooting.

A government-backed inquiry into antisemitism, launched after the attack, is due to deliver its findings on December 18. Geller’s funeral is scheduled for next week.
