Gill smashes fastest ODI double ton as India beat West Indies in run-fest

Shubman Gill struck the fastest double century in one-day international history as India completed the second-highest successful chase in an ODI with an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the second match of the three-game series in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Gill, the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 deliveries and brought up the quickest ODI century of his career before converting it into the fastest ODI double hundred. The 27-year-old had previously scored his first ODI double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.

Rohit Sharma set the tone with a 72-ball century, passing 12,000 runs in the format, during a blistering 255-run opening stand with Gill. After Rohit’s departure, Gill ensured India’s charge did not lose momentum as he anchored their pursuit of the massive 406-run target.

West Indies had earlier produced a stunning batting performance, posting 405-7 in their 50 overs — their highest-ever ODI total — after John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all struck centuries.

It was only the sixth time in ODI cricket that three batters from the same team scored centuries in an innings. West Indies’ total also surpassed their previous best of 389, scored against England at St George’s in 2019.

Campbell and Hope put on 110 runs from 79 balls for the second wicket before Hope and Jangoo added 182 for the third wicket to set up the record total. Campbell struck five sixes in his rapid century, including 22 runs from one over by Prasidh Krishna.

Despite West Indies’ huge total, India completed the chase with 39 balls to spare, with Gill’s unbeaten 223 leading the hosts to an eight-wicket victory.

India’s bowlers also faced injury setbacks, with Prasidh Krishna and Naman Dhir picking up injuries. Paceman Auqib Nabi endured a difficult ODI debut, conceding 84 runs — the fourth-most by an Indian bowler on debut.

Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav were among India’s wicket-takers, with the pair claiming two wickets each.

West Indies scored 36 runs in the final five overs and finished with a run rate of 8.10. Their performance came less than a week after reports that their players would be required to take a 25 per cent pay cut as part of wider cost-saving measures.

The match was the second of the three-match ODI series. India won the opening match by eight wickets in Thiruvananthapuram to take a 1-0 lead.

West Indies scored 295-7 in their 50 overs in the first ODI, with Justin Greaves scoring 101 and Campbell making 62.

Kuldeep Yadav was India’s leading bowler, taking four wickets for 40 runs in the series opener.

India chased down the target in 41.4 overs for the loss of two wickets, with Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 139 and captain Shubman Gill making 110.

Kohli also completed 15,000 ODI runs during the match and registered his 55th ODI century.
