FIFA World Cup: South Africa beat South Korea to reach knockout stage for first time

MONTERREY, Mexico: Thapelo Maseko scored the only goal as South Africa stunned South Korea 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

The 22-year-old winger struck in the 63rd minute to seal a famous victory for Bafana Bafana, who began the final Group A match at the bottom of the standings knowing only a win would keep their hopes alive.

South Africa finished as Group A runners-up and advanced to the round of 32, where they will face Group B runners-up Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. It will be the first World Cup knockout match for both nations.

South Africa made the brighter start despite playing in front of a predominantly South Korean crowd in Monterrey.

Maseko threatened early with a swift counterattack before South Korea defender Lee Gihyuk recovered to block the move. Goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu then produced two crucial saves before halftime, first denying Thalente Mbatha’s long-range effort and later stopping Evidence Makgopa from close range.

South Korea coach Hong Myungbo responded by making three substitutions after the break, including introducing captain Son Heungmin, as his side sought the breakthrough.

Instead, South Africa struck against the run of play.

Substitute Teshpang Moremi burst down the left wing before delivering a low cross to Maseko, who controlled the ball onto his left foot and fired a low shot inside the near post.

South Korea dominated possession in the closing stages but failed to create enough clear-cut opportunities to force an equaliser as South Africa held firm to secure a landmark victory.

The goal made Maseko the second-youngest South African to score at a FIFA World Cup at 22 years and 225 days.

“It is difficult to explain what this feels like. It is a fantastic experience,” South Africa coach Hugo Broos said after the match.

“We played really well and created chances. Tactically we did really well and Korea Republic couldn’t find the spaces they wanted. What we have done over the last five years is amazing.”

Maseko described the achievement as “a dream.”

“It’s unbelievable. Thank you to the fans who supported us. There were many people who didn’t believe in us, but this team showed it is capable and strong,” he said.

South Korea coach Hong accepted responsibility for the defeat.

“The players gave everything they had, but it is disappointing that we conceded the opening goal. The responsibility for this result lies with me as head coach,” he said.

South Africa captain Ronwen Williams said his side had used the doubts surrounding the team as motivation.

“Everybody was against us. We used that as energy to fight today. It’s amazing what we achieved,” he said.

South Korea must now wait to see whether they progress as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
