Govt moves to compile first federal crime list of heinous crimes

LAHORE: The Ministry of Interior has decided to establish Pakistan’s first federal crime list by bringing together data on individuals involved in heinous and organised crimes across the country, officials said.

The proposed central database will include records of proclaimed and absconding offenders, terrorists and individuals involved in money laundering, human and drug trafficking, cybercrime and financial fraud.

According to officials, the data will be collected at the Command and Control Centre of the National Police Bureau.

Records maintained by the inspectors general of police of all provinces, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other relevant institutions will be integrated into a single system to compile the federal crime list.

The database will also include information on members and office-bearers of proscribed organisations and individuals involved in financing terrorism.

Records of suspects involved in interprovincial and transnational organised crime, as well as smuggling, will also form part of the central database.

Individuals involved in cybercrime and financial fraud will be included in the list, while provisions are also being considered to include people involved in crimes related to begging.

The federal crime list will also contain records of individuals subject to Interpol Red Notices and other relevant international alerts.

Officials said a proposal was also under consideration to assign a unique National Criminal Identification Number to every individual included in the federal crime list.

The proposed identification number would be linked to the individual’s Computerised National Identity Card number, creating a centralised system for tracking criminal records across relevant law-enforcement and investigative agencies.
