Speaking on the occasion, national team captain Mohammad Rizwan expressed excitement about playing in front of home crowds. “Our feelings are always special when we play at home. The support from Lahore is incredible, and we hope it continues.”

Former captain Babar Azam congratulated everyone on the new stadium and emphasised the strong support the team receives in Lahore. “We always feel a great sense of backing here.”

Star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi acknowledged the consistent support from Lahore fans. “We need this same energy throughout the series and the entire Champions Trophy. Pray for us to win it for Pakistan,” he urged.

Afridi added that the team aims to create new memories at the revamped stadium.

The colourful ceremony at Gaddafi Stadium began with the national anthem and was attended by a large number of cricket fans and the national cricket team.

Gaddafi Stadium was reopened after a 117-day renovation during which LED floodlights, larger score screens, new hospitality boxes and upgraded seating were installed.

The eight-team Champions Trophy will be staged from February 19 to March 9 in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi, although arch-rival India’s matches will be staged in the United Arab Emirates after they refused to play in Pakistan.

A warm-up tri-nation series of matches between Pakistan New Zealand and South Africa begins at the stadium on Saturday.
