Karachi police detain officer’s son after checkpoint altercation

KARACHI: Karachi police have arrested a young man after he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a roadside checking operation.

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, prompted an official inquiry, which led to the man’s arrest.

The incident occurred in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area during snap checking, where police had stopped a vehicle for inspection, according to officials.

Footage circulating online appeared to show the man, identified by police as the son of a female police officer, grabbing a sub-inspector by the collar and hurling abuse during a heated exchange.

Police said that the vehicle was fitted with what appeared to be police lights and a number plate resembling that of law enforcement, raising suspicion during the check.

The Karachi police later arrested the man and seized the vehicle, officials said, without providing further details on the charges.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza has directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South to conduct a comprehensive inquiry.

Police said the probe would examine the conduct of all parties involved.

Subsequently, another video of the incident surfaced, offering what appeared to be a different angle of the encounter.

The footage was provided by the suspect’s family and showed an exchange between the man and a police officer identified as Station House Officer Shazan Shakeel of the Qayyumabad check post.

The video captured a tense verbal exchange between both sides, although at times efforts were made to de-escalate the situation.

It also showed the officer holding the car door and attempting to remove the vehicle’s keys, according to the footage shared by the arrested man’s father.

Police said investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events and whether any misconduct occurred on either side.
