Lahore board 9th result: govt schools trail private institutions by wide margin

LAHORE: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore has announced the 9th class annual examination results, exposing a stark gap in the performance of government and private schools.

According to the results, fewer than 40 per cent of students from government institutions passed the examination, compared with more than 70 per cent from private schools.

According to the result statistics, 101,079 regular students from government institutions appeared for the examination, but only 40,409 passed, with the pass rate standing at 39.98 per cent.

In comparison, 79,185 students from private affiliated institutions appeared in the exam with 56,157 passing, resulting in a pass percentage of 70.92 per cent.

The figures show a gap of nearly 31 percentage points between the two sectors, with private institutions recording a substantially higher success rate despite having fewer students appearing for the examination.

The overall results were also poor. Of the 280,676 candidates who appeared in the 9th class examination, 130,543 passed, giving an overall pass rate of just 46.51 per cent.

This means that more than half of the students who appeared for the examination failed.

The disparity was also evident in the science group, where 47.79 per cent of students from government schools passed, compared with 73.16 per cent from private institutions.

The performance gap was even more pronounced in the humanities group. Only 25 per cent of government-school students passed, while the pass rate among students from private institutions stood at 38.29 per cent.

The newly introduced technology group also showed a substantial difference between the two sectors, with the pass rate for government-school students standing at around 40 per cent, compared with 71.96 per cent for private-school students.

The board-wide results showed that the Science group performed better than the other major streams, with 111,802 of 203,844 candidates passing, for a success rate of 54.85 per cent.

The Humanities group recorded a much lower pass rate of 22.93 per cent, with only 16,228 of 70,761 candidates passing. The Technology group had a pass rate of 41.39 per cent, with 2,513 of 6,071 candidates successful.

The results were announced by BISE Lahore on Wednesday, with the board making the official result cards available through its online portal.

The figures have renewed questions about the quality of education and academic performance in government schools, particularly given the wide gap between government and private institutions.

The results also point to significant challenges in the humanities and technology streams, where overall success rates remained considerably below those recorded in the science group.

The comparison between government and private institutions covers regular students enrolled in affiliated schools and does not include candidates who appeared as private candidates.
