LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday distributed e-bikes among students, fulfilling what she said a promise she made four months ago.
Speaking at the the Punjab Youth Initiative Programme ceremony, she felicitated the students who received the bikes and said: “We aim to address the difficulties faced by students as quickly as possible.”
The chief minister said that approximately 190,000 registered themselves for e-bikes, with 27,000 electric bikes set to be distributed across Punjab.
She said that the Punjab government will cover half of the down payment for these e-bikes. She expressed gratitude to Nawaz Sharif for his guidance and emphasised her vision for Punjab to transition towards e-bikes and e-transport. “All the institutions concerned and individuals deserve kudos for the completion of this project,” she added.
In the second phase of the distribution, she said, the number of e-bikes will be increased further. The same bikes have been distributed in all districts of Punjab.

Maryam Nawaz also mentioned the introduction of laptop schemes and a Rs25 billion scholarship scheme for students of Punjab, ensuring that those who cannot afford fees will receive government support.
“We’re coming up with more schemes for youth, including battery insurance for e-bikes. 100 per cent of the bikes are given on merit,” she stated.
Maryam Nawaz highlighted her aspiration for Punjab to lead in development, transport, and student facilities and expressed a desire to see similar progress in other provinces. She announced that an MoU has been signed for electric buses, with 27 e-buses expected to arrive in Lahore in December. “Punjab Education will take the lead in providing facilities to students,” she concluded.
