Mumbai is on high alert after a threatening email warned of bomb attacks at several high-profile locations, including the Bombay High Court (BHC), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow Jalsa and the Worli Racecourse, according to India Today.
The email was received by BHC, the report said. Mumbai Police have launched an investigation to identify the sender, while security agencies have been alerted.
The threat is the second recent incident in which Bachchan has been named. On October 22, a threatening email sent to a school in Mumbai also mentioned the veteran actor. Authorities clarified at the time that Bachchan had not received a direct threat.
After that incident, Bachchan’s customary Sunday appearance outside his Mumbai home took an unusual turn, as he stood behind a protective glass shield with his son, Abhishek Bachchan, by his side.
The All Indian Cine Workers Association subsequently sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention, citing concerns about the safety of Bollywood actors and their families.
The latest threat comes amid a series of security concerns involving celebrities in Mumbai. On October 18, shots were fired at actor Tiger Shroff’s car, an incident claimed by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Actors Tusshar Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana also received threats in the name of the Bishnoi gang this week. Police are trying to establish whether the threat recordings are genuine.
A 30-year-old Bengaluru-based IT engineer was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday over the threats to Kapoor and Khurrana. Preliminary investigations have found no evidence linking him to the Bishnoi gang.
