Pakistan gaining influence in Middle East crisis diplomacy, National Interest says

ISLAMABAD: An opinion piece in The National Interest has described Pakistan as an emerging diplomatic and security player with an expanding role in Middle East crisis management, including recent efforts linked to US-Iran tensions and ceasefire diplomacy.

The article argues that Pakistan’s influence is no longer confined to South Asia, portraying it instead as an increasingly central actor in regional mediation efforts across the Middle East.

It highlights Pakistan’s military leadership, particularly Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as playing a notable role in supporting efforts that contributed to a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran during a period of heightened regional escalation.

The op-ed points to the Islamabad talks held on April 12–13 as a significant diplomatic moment, saying the engagement brought senior US and Iranian officials into structured contact at a critical juncture.

Pakistan’s approach is described as discreet and effective, with the article arguing that its military-led diplomacy has been able to operate where conventional diplomatic channels have struggled to produce results.
