Pakistan proposes establishing an international peace conference at UN to address Gaza crisis


NEW YORK: In an address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, issued a resolute call for the establishment of an international peace conference aimed at tackling the ongoing Gaza crisis and advocating for a two-state solution.

Ambassador Akram condemned Israel’s relentless aggression against Gaza, decrying the huge loss of Palestinian lives, including innocent women and children. He lamented the Security Council’s failure to intervene effectively, stating that its primary responsibility under the UN Charter was to halt atrocities “perpetrated by Israeli occupying forces”.

Expressing solidarity with the Arab Islamic Summit’s stance, Ambassador Akram urged all UN member states to “exert diplomatic, political, and legal pressure on Israeli authorities” to “cease their crimes against humanity” in Gaza.

The Pakistan ambassador highlighted the urgent humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, stating that the imminent risk of mass starvation in Gaza due to dwindling food supplies and essential services. He stressed that urgent action was imperative to prevent a catastrophic humanitarian crisis”.

Proposing the convening of an international peace conference on Palestine, Ambassador Akram urged adherence to agreed-upon principles of international law and UN resolutions. He called for unwavering support for the “restoration of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people” to self-determination “within a two-state solution”.

Ambassador Akram concluded his speech by imploring the “international community to fulfill its obligation by halting Israeli aggression against Gaza immediately”.
