ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said Youm-e-Takbeer marked one of the most important days in Pakistan’s history, when the nation demonstrated unmatched courage and declared itself a nuclear power.

In his message on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, the prime minister said Pakistan’s successful nuclear tests restored the balance of power in the region and sent a clear message to the world that the country was fully aware of its defence needs.

He said Pakistan had no aggressive designs against any country, but reserved the right to defend itself. The PM added that the country’s dignity and sovereignty remained paramount, and that its strong nuclear deterrent served as a decisive barrier against any hostile designs.

PM pays tribute to national heroes

Prime Minister Shehbaz paid tribute to all those who contributed to the completion of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, including national heroes, scientists, experts, workers and the armed forces.

He especially acknowledged the services of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and Dr Samar Mubarakmand, saying their contributions were invaluable. He also paid tribute to all scientists, engineers and members of the armed forces who helped make Pakistan’s defence impregnable.

The PM said the nation would always remain grateful to its benefactors for their role in strengthening the country’s security.

He also said the vision of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the decision-making and leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif proved crucial in making Pakistan a nuclear power.

Shehbaz said Pakistan had faced intense economic pressure and threats of sanctions to stop it from conducting nuclear tests. However, he added, Nawaz Sharif did not give in to any pressure or temptation and remained determined to protect the country’s freedom and sovereignty.
