The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in the upper districts of the province.

According to the PDMA, the severe heatwave is likely to continue across the province in the coming days. Due to the intense heat, glaciers and snow in the northern regions of the country are melting rapidly.

The upper districts of the province are expected to receive rainfall from the evening of June 4. The combination of rainwater and the rapid melting of glaciers and snow poses a threat of gully and flash floods in these areas.

There is also a risk of flash floods and landslides in the northern districts. In view of this situation, the PDMA has issued an alert to the deputy commissioners of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, and Mansehra.

The authority has directed local administrations to warn residents of low-lying areas in advance and ensure that community alert systems remain active, as these areas may be affected by flooding in streams and rivers.

The PDMA has urged the local administration to continuously monitor sensitive locations and issue timely warnings in vulnerable areas.

Citizens and tourists have been advised to avoid riverbanks and storm drains and refrain from unnecessary travel. Rescue 1122 and other relevant agencies have also been instructed to remain on high alert to respond to any emergency situation.
