Spotify expands premium offerings with full-length music videos

WEB DESK: Spotify, the renowned Swedish music streaming platform, is embarking on a new venture by introducing full-length music videos in a limited beta launch tailored for its premium subscribers.

This move marks Spotify’s foray into a domain traditionally dominated by YouTube for nearly two decades.

The availability of music videos will initially be exclusive to premium users in select regions, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya.

This beta phase is set to commence on Wednesday, as part of Spotify’s strategic efforts to expand its user base.

While Spotify sets its sights on achieving a user base of 1 billion by 2030, it faces stiff competition from other major players like Apple Music and YouTube, the latter of which offers free access to music videos.

Spotify’s roll-out will feature a curated selection of music videos, encompassing chart-toppers from global sensations like Ed Sheeran to beloved local artists such as Aluna.

In a previous move, Spotify introduced “clips” in March last year, which are brief under-30-second vertical videos directly uploaded by artists onto the platform.

Furthermore, the company has diversified its content offerings by incorporating podcasts and audiobooks, aiming to further engage its audience.

In February, Spotify projected that its premium subscriber count would reach 239 million in the current quarter, surpassing earlier estimates of 238.3 million.
