The deadly collapse of a school building in Peshawar’s Dir Colony, which killed at least 34 people, including 32 children and two teachers, has once again raised concerns over the safety of buildings, especially schools, and the enforcement of construction regulations in Pakistan. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the tragedy, with questions emerging over the building’s condition, approvals and safety inspections. The incident has renewed scrutiny of similar disasters in which structural failures, poor maintenance or alleged negligence have put students and teachers at risk.
From residential buildings and wedding gatherings to classrooms and tuition centres, roof collapses across Pakistan have claimed scores of lives in 2026, with children among the most frequent victims.

Heavy rainfall, ageing infrastructure, excessive structural loads and ongoing construction work have featured in reports of several incidents, raising questions about building safety and the enforcement of construction standards.
In the past one year, there have been 32 reported cases or groups of incidents between including fatalities, injuries and circumstances surrounding each collapse.

Is this preventable?
The incidents documented throughout 2026 reveal several recurring circumstances behind fatal roof collapses in Pakistan.
In KP, multiple residential roofs gave way during heavy rainfall, particularly in Charsadda, Shangla, Swat, Kohat and other districts where ageing or mud-built structures featured in reporting. These incidents frequently affected families inside their homes, with women and children accounting for many of the casualties.

Punjab also witnessed deadly collapses linked to construction activity and excessive structural loading. The deaths of 14 children at a Lahore tuition centre in June and four children at a Dera Ghazi Khan school in May highlighted the risks of undertaking repair or extension work on buildings occupied by students.
Other incidents involved large gatherings, including weddings and the distribution of welfare payments. In Rahim Yar Khan, seven women died when a shop roof collapsed at a payment distribution point, while wedding-related collapses in Charsadda and Sheikhupura also resulted in deaths and injuries.
Taken together, the reported cases raise questions about the condition of older residential buildings, the structural assessment of properties undergoing modifications, building-code enforcement and the adequacy of safety inspections at educational and commercial premises.
