ISLAMABAD: Wali Khan, the son of Dr Uzma Khan, has raised alarm over his mother’s health in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail, calling on authorities to immediately allow her to see her personal doctor.
Dr Uzma is the sister of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
The concerns come days after Noreen Niazi, the 70-year-old sister of jailed Imran Khan, was shifted from Kot Lakhpat jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) after complaining of heart-related problems.
The PTI shared a post by Wali Khan in which he quoted a statement from his aunt, Rubina Khan, who said she had received information through informal sources from inside the jail that her sister’s blood pressure was rising and that she was not receiving medical treatment.
“I have received information from inside Kot Lakhpat jail, through informal sources, that my sister Uzma Khan’s blood pressure is also shooting up and she is not receiving any medical treatment,” Rubina said in the statement shared by Wali.
Rubina said Uzma’s blood pressure had historically remained low to normal and that the family had received no information from jail authorities about her condition.
She added that Uzma had undergone heart valve replacement surgery and said her condition was vulnerable, calling for her to be urgently examined by a cardiologist.
Reacting to his aunt’s statement, Wali described the situation as “very serious and critical”, saying his mother’s blood pressure was rising while she was not receiving treatment.
“My mother has a replaced heart valve and her blood pressure is rising with no treatment,” he said, adding that authorities must immediately allow her to see her own doctor.
The claims regarding Dr Uzma’s health and medical treatment could not immediately be independently verified. There was no immediate response available from the relevant prison authorities.
Dr Uzma is currently being held at Kot Lakhpat jail along with Noreen and Aleema Khan.
According to family sources, no family member was informed about Noreen’s transfer to the hospital.
Her lawyer, Rana Mudassar Umar, said she was shifted from the jail to the PIC after complaining of heart pain and that initial medical tests were being conducted.
Earlier, the Punjab government extended the detention of Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi by another 30 days.
Detention orders issued against the three sisters of Imran Khan have been challenged in the Lahore High Court through a petition filed by Advocate Rana Mudassar Umar.
