Woman sent on physical remand over alleged killing of three children

LAHORE: A court in Lahore on Friday sent a woman on a five-day physical remand in connection with the alleged killing of her three young children in Lahore’s Achhra area.

Judicial Magistrate Irshad Hussain Sabzwari approved the police request after hearing arguments in the Model Town Kutchery court, rejecting an initial plea for a 14-day remand.

The accused, identified as Rida Fatima, was produced before the court under tight security.

Police have registered a case against her over the alleged murder of her three minor children.

The case has drawn widespread attention after closed-circuit television footage emerged showing the accused leaving her home shortly after the incident.

In the footage, she can reportedly be seen walking out of a street in the Achhra locality following the alleged killings.

Investigators said the accused initially attempted to alter the crime scene and later returned to the neighbourhood, where she allegedly contacted emergency services with the help of residents.

Police said post-mortem examinations of the victims have been completed and the bodies were handed over to their family members.

The children — identified as five-year-old Mominah Batool, four-year-old Momin Raza and 18-month-old Amma Habiba — were taken to their native village in Jhang district for burial.

Officials said the bodies were transported to the family’s ancestral village, where funeral prayers are expected to be held before burial.

A senior Lahore police investigation official said the case would be pursued with “solid evidence” to ensure the accused receives what he termed “appropriate punishment.”

“An investigation is under way and all available evidence will be presented in court,” the official said.

Further proceedings will continue as investigators gather forensic and witness evidence in the case, police added.
