‘The Apprentice’ director surprised by the extent of controversy the film generated

NEW YORK: The cast of the new Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” attended the New York premiere of the film at the Directors Guild of America on Tuesday (October 8), with the director admitting he was ‘naive’ to the amount of controversy the film would generate.

“The movie is not trying to tell you who to vote for, it’s trying to inform people about what made Donald Trump, what shaped Donald Trump, how he became the person he is today, how we got to where we got to today,” said actor Jeremy Strong.

Sebastian Stan, who made his name in the Captain America trilogy as the Winter Soldier, morphs into the former president of the United States from his early stages working for his father’s business to a brazen, self-centred tycoon.

The story focuses on Trump’s time under the tutelage of Roy Cohn, a political fixer best known for his involvement in Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist scare campaigns of the 1950s and portrayed by Succession’s Jeremy Strong. His three rules for success, which Trump later takes credit for while speaking with the writer of his business advice book “The Art of the Deal” are: deny everything, always be on the attack and never admit defeat.

The pupil eventually overtakes the mentor, as Trump’s increasing cruelty towards Cohn and his wife, Ivana, played by Maria Bakalova, matches the decline of his youthful looks.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, receiving an eight-minute ovation and mixed reviews from critics. Following the premiere, Trump’s lawyers reportedly issued the filmmakers a cease and desist letter to stop the film’s release. However after trouble finding distribution, the film will be released in Australian cinemas on 10 October, US cinemas on 11 October and in the UK on 18 October.

Director Ali Abbasi said that he was naive to how hard it would be to release the film.

“I really felt, you know, you know, everyone would be excited to see a movie about these characters and they would see that it’s not only political movie, it has a lot of excitement. It has a lot of interesting context – 70s, 80s New York colorful people, colorful environments, the soundtrack, all that. But it’s the amount of skepticism that we, we have been met with from both sides,” said Abbasi.

Stan is hoping people’s curiosity for the truth drives them to see the film, however, he fears most people have become a victim of selective thinking.
