WEB DESK: While we often think about food in terms of its impact on physical health, it’s easy to overlook its potential effects on mental well-being. However, experts in mental health are cautious about certain foods and beverages that can exacerbate anxiety and depression.

Therapists and psychiatrists, who have dedicated their careers to guiding individuals toward mental wellness, are well aware of these potential impacts. Consequently, they often make conscious choices to either avoid these items or consume them in moderation, all in the interest of safeguarding their own mental health.

Excessive caffeine

For some, too much caffeine can worsen anxiety. Consuming over 250 milligrams of caffeine per day, equivalent to roughly 2 1/2 cups of coffee, has been associated with increased anxiety.

Experts suggest moderation to avoid the negative consequences, as over-caffeination can lead to stress, burnout, and sleep issues.

Diet soda dilemma

Although diet sodas may seem like a refreshing choice, their health concerns may outweigh the benefits.

These beverages often contain chemicals like phenylalanine, which can disrupt brain neurochemistry by affecting serotonin and dopamine production – vital for maintaining a good mood. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, found in diet sodas, can also raise stress hormones and increase free radicals in the brain.

Alcohol’s influence

While occasional drinks are common during social events, alcohol is a depressant that can lead to negative mood states and “hangxiety.” This refers to the elevated cortisol (stress hormone) levels during hangovers and recovery, impacting mental well-being.

Highly processed foods

Certain processed foods can cause anxiety spikes and mood changes. Ultra-processed foods can alter gut bacteria, leading to chronic inflammation, bloating, and potential depression.

These changes highlight the importance of considering the impact of diet on mental health.

Sugary treats and depression

Sugary candies, like Tootsie Rolls and candy corn, can contribute to increased inflammation in the body, linked to depression.

Research also suggests that sugary and starchy foods may contribute to depressive symptoms. It’s important to note that natural sugars, such as those found in fruits, don’t have the same effect on mental health.

Remember, moderation is key. While these foods and drinks may have negative effects on mental health, consuming them occasionally is unlikely to lead to significant consequences.
