‘In Flames’ and ‘Kamli’ dominate global stages, sparking international acclaim

WEB DESK: In the final days of 2023, Pakistan movie industry continues to make waves on the international stage, garnering significant attention at prestigious global festivals.

Two standout productions, Zarrar Kahn’s In Flames and Sarmad Khoosat’s Kamli, have recently been honored for their exceptional artistry and commitment to storytelling.

Zarrar Kahn proudly shared the success of In Flames on Instagram after it clinched the International Newcomer Award at the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg (IFFMH).

The festival’s jury praised the movie for its genre-shifting narrative, the connection to the audience, and the portrayal of a brave yet fragile young woman. Kahn expressed disbelief at the win, thanking those who believed in the film. In Flames not only marks Pakistan’s return to the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight but is also in the running for the international feature Oscar.

Meanwhile, in Belarus, Sarmad Khoosat’s Kamli made history at the Minsk International Film Festival by winning three prestigious awards. Saba Qamar was honoured with the Best Actor Award, Khoosat himself received the Best Director Award, and the movie secured the Viewers’ Choice accolade at the renowned Listapad festival, the largest film festival in Belarus.

 Khoosat Films and the director celebrated the triumph on their official Instagram accounts.

The success follows the positive reception of Saim Sadiq’s Joyland in 2023. The collective recognition of In Flames and Kamli has rekindled hope among artists regarding the future of filmmaking in Pakistan, particularly when exploring subjects previously assumed to be unpopular with audiences.
