WEB DESK: Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari lost over a whopping 542 kilograms (kg) in weight after undergoing treatments for months.
The Saudi national became the heaviest person on record at 610 kg. After news about him went viral online, Saudi King Abdullah offered proper medical treatment free of cost to Shaari.

Shaari’s severe obesity left him reliant on others for basic needs and confined to his bed for over three years. The Saudi king arranged for Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari to be moved to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, utilising specialised equipment and a team of 30 health professionals.
Once in Riyadh, Shaari underwent a rigorous treatment plan that included gastric bypass surgery and a tailored diet and exercise regimen. Intensive physiotherapy was also part of his programme to help him regain mobility.
Within six months, the Saudi national successfully reduced his weight by 320 kg, which was more than half of his starting weight. By late 2017, he had lost a total of 542 kg, bringing his weight down to 68 kg. By 2023, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari achieved a final weight of 63.5 kg.
The substantial weight loss led to the need for several surgeries to remove excess skin, a common outcome after extreme weight reduction. Shaari completed his final skin removal surgery in early 2018.
His extraordinary transformation was noted by the medical staff, who affectionately referred to him as the “Smiling Man.”
