‘Wish’ commemorates Disney’s past and present magic

LOS ANGELES: The much-anticipated animated musical Wish commemorating CCo’s 100th anniversary, takes a nostalgic journey to the studio’s humble origins, drawing inspiration from its iconic song “When You Wish Upon a Star” from the 1940 classic Pinocchio.

According to Jennifer Lee, Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer and the writer of the new movie, the “power and importance of wishing” are central to the storytelling magic and potential within the studio.

In an interview, Lee, known for her work on Frozen emphasised how a simple word unlocked a rich story, echoing the core of Disney’s essence.

Opening in theaters on Nov 22, Wish follows the story of 17-year-old Asha, who, sensing darkness in the Kingdom of Rosas, passionately appeals to the stars. A magical Star responds, assisting her in challenging the powerful sorcerer King Magnifico after detecting his evil intentions.

Chris Pine, who voices King Magnifico, expressed appreciation for the film’s elegant celebration of Disney’s 100-year legacy, focusing on the timeless theme of “When You Wish Upon a Star.” He emphasised the beauty of personifying dreams through stars in the movie.

Founded in 1923 in Hollywood, California, by brothers Walt and Roy O. Disney, Walt Disney Studios holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest running animation studio.

Known for its storytelling rooted in classic fairy and folk tales, the studio blends romance, humor, sadness, high-stakes action, and self-discovery in its movies.

Ariana DeBose, lending her voice to Asha, highlighted the significance of wishing and singing to one’s heart’s desire, stating that it’s ingrained in the Disney DNA. She believes this theme will continue to play a vital role in future Disney movies.
