Blinken applauds Kakar, affirms support for Pakistan’s democracy

ISLAMABAD: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has congratulated new caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar as he assumed office.

Blinken took to his X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his feelings and underscored the significance of joint commitment to economic growth. He also highlighted Pakistan’s readiness for constitutionally-aligned, free and fair elections, all while upholding the principles of free speech and assembly.

In response, Prime Minister Kakar emphasised the interim government’s dedication to ensure a transparent electoral process according to the Constitution. He stressed the significance of the partnership between the US and Pakistan, showcasing their mutual commitment to economic prosperity, democratic governance, and regional stability.

Blinken’s statement emerged shortly after US Department of State Spokesperson Vedant Patel, during a press briefing, commented on the US stance regarding Pakistan’s new interim setup and the government’s responsibility to conduct elections within the next 90 days.

“So, we’re aware that the Pakistan National Alliance and the government have been dissolved. We have noted Senator Kakar’s appointment as the caretaker prime minister. We anticipate collaborating with the interim premier and his team in organising elections,” Patel responded.

Meanwhile, Patel also emphasised the US commitment to partnering with Pakistan on shared interests, particularly in boosting Pakistan’s economic stability, prosperity, and security. Patel stressed the importance of conducting impartial elections, respecting democratic norms, and upholding the rule of law.

These developments came after the wrap-up of the coalition government led by Shehbaz Sharif, last week. However, due to recent authorisation of the 2023 census by the outgoing government, a move that mandates the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to revise constituencies, it is probable that Pakistan’s capacity to adhere to the 90-day election timeframe might be undermined.
