LAHORE: The number of dengue cases in Punjab has surged to 667 in 2024, with 35 new infections reported in the past 24 hours, worsening fears related to the ongoing threat posed by this mosquito-borne illness.
In response, authorities have ramped up efforts to curb its transmission. Public awareness initiatives are in full swing, educating people on how to protect themselves and recognise the dangers of dengue.

Additionally, strict actions are being enforced against those violating the Dengue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Recently, a tyre shop owner in Kabari Bazaar was charged after dengue larvae were found in his workshop.
The District Health Authority in Rawalpindi has conducted thorough inspections as well. By June 23, health teams had discovered larvae in 8,064 locations, with 6,735 of these found in homes and 1,361 in outdoor areas.
District Coordinator Dr Sajjad Mehmood revealed that 999 teams – 788 focused on indoor inspections and 211 on outdoor checks – are actively working to limit the breeding of mosquito larvae.

Nevertheless, the increasing number of cases highlights the need for continuous cooperation and awareness from the public.
Dengue fever is spread primarily by female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus species. Preventive measures, coupled with public awareness, remain key in reducing the spread of the virus.
