NA, senate

ISLAMABAD: Both the National Assembly and Senate will convene today amid heightened political activity surrounding a potential constitutional amendment.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also called a federal cabinet meeting today at 3 PM. The premier will also host a dinner in honour of the parliamentarians. He has urged the members of the parliament to ensure their participation in today’s sessions.

The National Assembly was scheduled to meet at 11:30 AM, which is now moved to 4 PM, while the Senate session will be held at 4:00 PM.

The NA is likely to debate and pass a constitutional amendment, reportedly related to the judicial landscape in the country.

However, the Senate Secretariat’s five-point agenda, notably, does not include any item related to a constitutional amendment.

The Leader of the House, Ishaq Dar, is expected to move the senate for the suspension of the question period. Attention notices on pressing issues such as unrest in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, and a motion to express gratitude to the President for his address to Parliament are also on the Senate’s agenda.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is likely to go against the potential constitutional amendment. The party has reportedly instructed its members not to vote in the National Assembly.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also hosting a dinner to consult with party members on the country’s situation and the constitutional amendment.
