LAHORE: Governor of Punjab Sardar Salim Haider has rejected all 13 summaries sent by the provincial government for the appointment of vice chancellors at various universities, according to a statement from the Governor House spokesperson.

The spokesperson explained that the summaries were rejected as they did not comply with established rules and regulations.

The governor has also provided detailed reasons for rejecting the summaries to the provincial government.

Just a day earlier, the Punjab government had appointed vice chancellors for seven universities, citing the expiration of the fixed 14-day period for approval, sources at the Governor House revealed. However, Governor Haider has dismissed these appointments along with the corresponding summaries.

According to sources, the provincial government may recommend up to three names for each vice chancellor post, but it is not obligated to do so. Additionally, the 14-day period for the appointment of vice chancellors at six universities has not yet concluded, as per Governor House sources.

The appointment of vice chancellors for more than 14 universities remains pending, creating further delays in the leadership of key academic institutions, including Punjab University, the University of Gujarat, and Bahauddin Zakaria University, whose recent appointments have also been nullified by the governor.

Governor Haider emphasised that vice chancellors will only be appointed based on merit, highlighting the importance of following proper procedures to ensure the leadership of the province’s universities.
