Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman elected JI chief

LAHORE: Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman was elected as the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) with a majority vote.
Former JI chief Sirajul Haq, Liaquat Baloch and Hafiz Naeem were the contestants for the JI Ameer’s slot. However, a majority of the Shoora members voted in favour of Hafiz Naeem.
Jamaat-e-Islami spokesperson Qaiser Sharif stated that the term of the new Ameer of JI will extend from 2024 to April 2029.
He said that the selection process within JI has been conducted for the next five years.”
He reiterated that JI is a completely democratic party, and according to its constitution, elections are regularly held at every level within the party.”
Qaiser said that the party does not belong to any individual or family but to every member and worker.”
He mentioned that 46,000 members from across the country cast their votes through a secret ballot. He also said that Sirajul Haq is the fifth Ameer of JI and is completing his second term on April 8.
He further added that Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi was the founder of JI, and other notable leaders who served as JI Ameer were Mian Tufail Muhammad, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, and Syed Munawar Hasan.”
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, a prominent figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, has been a significant presence in Karachi’s political scene as the Ameer of JI Karachi.
His political journey reflects a commitment to activism and public service within the framework of JI’s principles.
Born on November 7, 1970, in Hyderabad, Rehman’s early life was marked by a move to Karachi, where he pursued an engineering degree at NED University and later a master’s in Islamic history from Karachi University.
His professional career as a water treatment engineer spans over two decades, but it is his political activism that has brought him into the limelight.
Rehman’s association with JI began in the early ’90s through the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, eventually leading to his leadership role in JI Karachi in 2013.
His tenure has seen him advocate for the rights of Karachi’s citizens.
The recent elections have been a tumultuous time for Rehman. Despite being elected as an MPA for PS-129, he resigned citing election irregularities, reflecting his stance on the integrity of the electoral process.
