Karachi weather: Electricity restoration in progress

KARACHI: Efforts to restore electricity are in full swing across Karachi after recent abrupt, heavy rain caused widespread disruption due to the weather late on Monday.
According to a spokesperson from K-Electric, the company’s overall network remains stable.

The K-Electric spokesperson stated that electricity restoration was ongoing in the areas affected by the recent rains. He said that residents should expect delays due to a mobile network outage.
The electricity provider said that power supply was uninterrupted from 1,960 feeders. Electricity was also reportedly “successfully restored” in several key areas, including Saeedabad municipality, Bloch H in North Nazimabad, DHA phase 2 extension, Khayaban-e-Mujahid, Khayaban-e-Shaheen, Zamzam, Chakiwara, and Frontier Colony.
Areas such as C-1 Area Liaquatabad and Sector 11-D North Karachi and 11F have also seen power restoration.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded substantial rainfall across Karachi.
Gulshan-e-Hadeed experienced the highest rainfall, with 42 millimetre (mm). Other areas saw varying amounts: Nazimabad recorded 26 mm, Surjani Town received 25.4 mm, Sadar had 13 mm, and Surjani Town (PAF) Faisal base measured 12 mm.
Meanwhile, Surjani Town experienced 12.4 mm of rain, while Jinnah Terminal in Faisal Cantonment saw 6 mm and PAF Masroor base recorded 5 mm.
The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, reported that the city of 20 million inhabitants had to endure 30 minutes of heavy rainfall.
Wahab stated that around 55 mm of rain fell in the city. Weather in Karachi is now clear, with major highways operational.
The mayor assured the residents that while some areas still had standing water, the issue was “being addressed”.
Wahab advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with local authorities. He warned that weather in Karachi will remain turbulent for next four to five days, with heavy rainfall expected.
The Karachi mayor urged everyone to help manage the urban challenges the monsoon weather brings.

Meanwhile, the Karachi and Sewerage Board (KWSB) deployed all available machinery to remove standing water from the roads. The board’s chief executive officer (CEO) Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that suction machines and dewatering pumps were dispatched to key locations, including main highways and sloping areas.
He said that all KWSB vehicles would remain on the streets until all water was “fully cleared”.
The Karachi mayor assured residents that municipal and administrative staff was working overtime to handle the situation and support the community. He mentioned that the city’s administration was on “high alert” to deal with any additional issues.
