Karachi’s electricity demand exceeds supply by 700 MW


he federal government sanctioned an increase in electricity prices across various consumer categories, including commercial, agricultural, and large-scale consumer.

KARACHI: Karachi residents are grappling with severe heat amidst increased load shedding or complete power outages.

Demand for electricity in Karachi exceeds 3600 megawatt (MW), while the main electricity supplier KArachi Electric (K-Electric) is only providing 2900 MW, leaving a shortfall of 700 MW.

The discrepancy has led to widespread power outages, particularly affecting densely populated areas such as New Karachi Town, North Karachi Township, North Nazimabad Town, and Surjani Town.

Late-night blackouts have also affected the neighbourhoods of Liaquatabad, Azizabad, and Hussainabad. Administrative subdivisions such as Baldia Town, Orangi Town, and the locality of Lyari have been without power for several hours.

According to a K-Electric spokesperson, 70 per cent of Karachi is receiving electricity as usual, but the remaining 30 per cent are experiencing load management due to issues like recovery and line losses.

The company, however, has declined to share specific data on electricity supply and demand, citing policy.
