mall road open for only cycles on Sunday due to smog

LAHORE: In an attempt to promote the use of cycles and address the escalating issue of smog in Lahore, the Punjab government has taken a decisive step by imposing a ban on all fuel-powered vehicles on Mall road.

This prohibition encompasses a wide range of vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses, vans, jeeps, and others on Mall road.

According to the announcement made by the Punjab government on Friday, the ban is specifically targeted for Sundays and aims to mitigate the impact of smog.

Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa issued explicit orders on Friday to all relevant departments, including Traffic Engineering & Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) and Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL).

These agencies have been tasked with making Lahore’s Mall Road conducive for cycling on Sunday, November 26.

Additionally, police and other departments have received directives to enforce the restriction on vehicular movement along the Mall road.

The Punjab government has reportedly gone a step further by specifying the timing for this vehicular ban.

From 9 AM to 5 PM on Sunday, November 26, no fuel-powered vehicles, be they cars or motorcycles, will be permitted on Lahore Mall Road.

Furthermore, Commissioner Lahore has announced a cycle ride/meetup scheduled for Sunday, encouraging citizens to actively participate in fostering a cycling culture in Lahore.

The event, labeled as the ‘Anti-smog cycle ride’ for smog awareness, is set to take place at Chairing Cross Mall road Lahore, commencing at 4 PM.

These comprehensive measures have been implemented with the overarching goal of making Lahore smog-free, signaling a collective effort towards environmental consciousness and public health.
