NAB LAW: ‘Short and sweet’ judgment expected soon

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday reversed the decision on former prime and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s 2022 petition challenging changes to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) law.

A bench of three judges, led by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, and including Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the petition today.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial during the hearing said that a “short and sweet” judgment would be announced soon after the lawyers concluded their arguments.

Khawaja Haris, the counsel for the former prime minister, informed the court that numerous unresolved cases had been sent back due to the NAB amendments.

To which the CJP remarked, “Are there any sections in the amendments under which cases could be referred to another relevant forum.”

“After the changes to the law, neither did the NAB have the authority to deal with the cases nor to send them to other relevant forums”, remarked Haris.

In June of last year, the former prime minister filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging changes to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) ordinance made  under the National Accountability (Second Amendment) Act of 2022.
