‘Pink toilets’ established in Bahawalpur

Pink toilets Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR: Commissioner Dr Ehtesham Anwar Mahar of Bahawalpur has announced the establishment of high-quality women’s toilets along the major highways within the Bahawalpur division.

The commissioner while talking to Dawn said that these facilities are now accessible at specific fuel stations. In the initial phase of this initiative, they have identified five sites in Bahawalnagar, six in Rahim Yar Khan, and ten in Bahawalpur districts.

He further stated that the establishment of these toilets was carried out in compliance with the directives of the Punjab chief secretary. Currently, apart from the motorways, there is a lack of dedicated women’s restrooms along the main roads in the country, forcing women to utilize common facilities, which often leads to compromises in terms of hygiene and privacy.

According to available information, users will be required to pay a nominal fee for using the facility. This fee aims to ensure the sustainability of the service and cover expenses for essential supplies like soap, hand wash, tissue papers, and continuous maintenance to maintain cleanliness around the clock.

The commissioner explained that a management committee, consisting of representatives from the relevant union councils, will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of these restroom facilities. Additionally, the overall supervision of these facilities will be overseen by the assistant commissioners.
