PM, other political figures react to May 9 incident


ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “condemned” the May 9 incident as “an attack on the state” on Thursday.

The PM called it “divisive politics” that undermine the state’s interests. He talked about the “sacrifice” of army officers and urged unity so that the country could progress.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly labeled May 9 as one of the “darkest chapter” in Pakistan’s history and denouncing the “threat” to the country’s “integrity”.

Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani also declared May 9 as a “dark day” in Pakistan’s history. The Senator condemned the vandalism of Senate and attacks on important facilities, in particular the irreparable damage caused to public infrastructure.

Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Gulbar Khan stated that May 9 marks one of the “darkest days” in the country’s history. He condemned the attempt to sow chaos under the guise of politics and stressed the importance of unity between the nation and the Pakistan army.

Meanwhile, Former Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its alleged role in the May 9 incident. He called for “transparency” and “accountability” and urged the government and opposition to engage in dialogue “without conditions”.

All political figures called for accountability of those responsible for the tragedy. The also called for the for “national unity” to overcome challenges facing Pakistan.
