PM Shehbaz chairs high-level meeting on energy sector reforms

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting focused on reforms in the energy sector on Thursday.

The meeting came up with solutions in a bid to address issues plaguing the electricity transmission system and distribution companies.

Shehbaz approved reforms and restructuring of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) to enhance the efficiency of the electricity transmission system. To speed up the process, a committee was set up to finalise and oversee the reforms and restructuring.

Shehbaz also pointed out a need for centralised coordination and said that the Prime Minister’s Office will establish a specialised cell to lead the implementation of reforms within the electricity sector.

To reduce heavy electricity consumption, Shehbaz requested a report on swapping high-power fans with low-power ones. A plan was also made to offer low-power fans to low-income individuals, aiming to alleviate their financial burden while promoting energy conservation

Shehbaz acknowledged the importance of affordable electricity for industrial growth. He urged the development of a comprehensive plan to provide electricity to the industrial sector at subsidised rates. This way, the PM argued, we can foster economic development within the country,.

Sharif stated that he pledged to lead monthly review meetings on power sector reforms to ensure “accountability and progress”. He said the government was steadfast in its commitment to positive change in the energy sector.
