LAHORE: In a major crackdown on electricity theft, Punjab Police have registered more than 57,000 cases across the province, with over 14,800 of them reported in Lahore alone.
According to a police spokesperson, over 41,120 people have been arrested so far for their involvement in power theft. In Lahore, the number of arrested suspects stands at 18,692. The operation, which has been ongoing for several months, is part of the government’s broader effort to reduce losses to the national exchequer.
Police officials say challans have been completed in more than 39,000 cases, and courts have handed down convictions and fines to at least 2,100 individuals. These penalties are aimed at sending a strong message to those who try to steal electricity through illegal connections or meter tampering.
Inspector General Punjab Dr Usman Anwar has directed that the operation continue with full force. He said electricity theft not only causes major financial damage but also creates unfair burdens on paying consumers.
Authorities say the campaign will expand further in the coming weeks, especially in areas where power theft remains widespread.
