Sindh to deregister unsafe, poorly maintained commercial vehicles

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced plans to deregister unsafe and poorly maintained commercial vehicles as part of a broader effort to improve road safety and public transport standards across the province.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the presence of visibly defective vehicles on Karachi’s roads, many of which appear unfit for service yet continue to operate without proper inspection.

Authorities hope the new policy will lead to a noticeable decline in such vehicles, making way for safer, roadworthy options.

As part of the initiative, the government will establish Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) centres along major routes, including the National Highway and Superhighway. These centres will assess whether commercial vehicles meet the required standards for both long and short-distance travel, focusing on engine performance and overall mechanical condition.

In addition, a new route for the Green Line and Orange Line public transport systems is expected to be introduced next week, in a bid to further improve urban mobility in Karachi.

Separately, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has directed the Transport Department to fast-track the launch of a special Pink EV Scooter scheme for women.

The programme aims to offer female commuters a safer and more independent transport option. A valid driving licence will be mandatory for working women and students who wish to apply for the electric scooters.

These developments were discussed in a high-level meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department held at the Sindh Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Minister Memon and attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kamal Dayo, People’s Bus Service Project Director Sohaib Shafiq, and other senior officials.

The session reviewed the progress of ongoing transport projects and took several key decisions aimed at strengthening road safety and modernising the inspection system for commercial vehicles.
