Weather update: Met Office warns of flash floods and landslides across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday issued a weather warning for regions across Pakistan, warning of potential flash floods and risk of landslides in Balochistan and northern Pakistan from Thursday till Saturday.
Flash floods
The Met Office predicted heavy rainfall from Thursday till Saturday across Balochistan, particularly in Noushki, Kharan, Turbat, Chagai, Gwadar, Awaran, Kech, Ziarat, Pishin, Barkhan, Naseerabad, Harnai, and Zhob.

The increased rainfall will lead to an increased risk of flash floods in local water inlets. Authorities warn the local residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel in the given time period.
Meanwhile, risk of sudden local floods can also be expected in in Dir, Swat, Chitral, Manshera, Kohistan, and Kashmir. Authorities have urged the residents to stay vigilant and heed any evacuation orders issued by local authorities.
Risk of Landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir
The PMD stated that there is a possibility of landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and northern Punjab – Murree and its surrounding regions.
Heavy shower of rain accompanied by winds will increase risk of landslides across northern Pakistan. Authorities warned tourists to avoid traveling to these destinations for the time being.
Precautionary Measures
Heavy rain accompanied by winds and even hail may pose risks to human lives and property, including crops, electric poles, vehicles, and solar panels. Authorities have warned residents to avoid going near electric poles with stagnated rainwater. Farmers are also advised to exercise caution while ensuring safety of their animals and crops.

The authorities have advised the citizens to stay updated about weather conditions and any warnings issued by local authorities. They also urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to landslides and flash floods.
Residents are urged to keep a bag filled emergency supplies and first aid kits if possible. They should be ready to leave in case of evacuation orders by local authorities.
