LAHORE: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned that the state will take action if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) proceeds with its planned protest on Feb 8, despite government requests to refrain from demonstrations.
Talking to media after inaugurating new passport offices in Lahore on Saturday, Naqvi said the government would once again request PTI to reconsider their protest. “We made a similar request on November 26 and will do the same for protest on Feb 8. If they do not comply, the state will step in,” he added.
Addressing concerns about protests during the Champions Trophy match in Lahore, Naqvi reiterated that the government prefers dialogue but is prepared to act if necessary.
The minister also highlighted efforts to streamline NADRA and passport offices, aiming to provide better services to citizens. “We are working to improve the timely delivery of passports and have discussed establishing a Passport Authority with the Prime Minister,” he added.
Responding to a query about customs and FIA-related issues, including illegal migration and agent mafias, he revealed that a significant overhaul of the FIA is imminent.
Commenting on illegal migration, Naqvi said stricter measures are being implemented at immigration counters to prevent unlawful travel, especially by individuals attempting to reach Europe through hazardous routes. “Most of these attempts originate from the Gujrat and Faisalabad divisions,” he noted.
The minister acknowledged the challenges faced by legitimate travellers and assured them that the government does not want to create difficulties for legal travel.
Naqvi emphasised that strict action would be taken against those tarnishing Pakistan’s reputation by engaging in illegal travel. “We have developed a strategy and will soon launch a crackdown against agent mafias, although I can’t claim their complete eradication,” he remarked.
He also mentioned his recent visit to the US, expressing optimism about its positive outcomes. “The government has good relations with the US, and I held meetings with congressmen and senators. The results will be visible soon,” he added.
