Sindh governor not being changed, Dar clarifies

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has refuted reports that the Sindh governor would be changed in the coming days.

MQM-P’s Kamran Tessori currently holds the position.

Reports related to the replacement of the Sindh governor are “false” and “baseless”, he said in a statement.

Earlier, reports claimed that a final decision had been made to change the Sindh governor and a new governor from the PML-N would be appointed in the coming days.

PML-N leader Bashir Memon’s name was being considered for the position after the N-league and the PPP reached an agreement on the matter.

Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah had also hinted at a change in the Sindh governor in the recent past, stating that if PML-N does not appoint the governor then PPP would provide the name.

MQM-P’s DENIAL

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) also denied what it called rumors of Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori’s removal, terming them as ‘baseless and mere speculation’.

Speaking to a private news channel, MQM-P Chairman Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that he had been with Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif since 8 am on Friday.

“PM Shehbaz has not mentioned anything about the governor’s removal. If the government had made such a decision, we would have been taken into confidence,” Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.

The MQM-P chairman said that his party is a key ally of the government and has representation in the cabinet.

Meanwhile, MQM-P senior member Dr. Farooq Sattar also issued a statement, praising Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori for his work in ‘various’ public interest projects.

Tessori was sworn in as the 34th governor of Sindh on October 10, 2022. His appointment had also “surprised” the MQM-P Rabita Committee as his name was not among the three names suggested by the party for the coveted slot.

The MQM-P had nominated Nasreen Jalil, Waseem Akhtar, and Aamir Chishti.
